Background

The Surfers Paradise Precinct is considered to be the hub of nightlife within the Gold Coast Local Government Area (LGA). An examination of the economic contribution of the Surfers Paradise Precinct has not been conducted previously to identify and understand the economic impact of the Night Time Economy to the Gold Coast as a whole.

This assessment was conducted through a face to face survey within the Surfers Paradise Precinct over the three peak nights of trade, Thursday Friday and Saturday nights. These surveys, with consultation from the Surfers Paradise Alliance, were used to estimate the annual expenditure within the Surfers Paradise Precinct. The annual expenditure was applied within an input-output framework in order to estimate the direct and indirect impacts for the wider Gold Coast economy, in terms of output, gross value add, incomes and employment.

Impact Assessment 

The direct and flow-on output resulting from the Surfers Paradise Precinct Night Time Economy totalled $3.5 billion, creating $1.6 billion worth of gross value add. The output and gross value add generated by the Surfers Paradise Precinct Night Time Economy resulted in $946.0 million in incomes paid to households and the direct and indirect employment of 19,038 full time equivalent (FTE) positions.
