Surfers Paradise has been an iconic tourist destination since the 1950s and continues to attract nearly 20,000 overnight visitors a day. It is home to more than 20,000 permanent residents and 3,700 businesses, with the residential population set to swell to 38,700 by 2031.

In February 2011, Gold Coast City Council invited residents, businesses, visitors and stakeholders to share their vision for Surfers Paradise to 2040.
